Rowallan Scouts Camp article

The Moot starts and finishes at Rowallan Scouts Camp in Nairobi, a 97 acre (39 hectare) site and the only natural forest camp in a city in Kenya, next to Kibera one of Kenya’s largest slums.
Jimmy Gakuva, National Camp Director for the Kenyan Scout Association, says that Rowallan and Kibera coexist very well together having a cordial relationship based on mutual respect. Most of the service crew, particularly the essential services, construction and maintenance workers come from Kibera.
The site was donated by Lord Rowallan in 1952 including the Rhodes Gate where you all registered and since then facilities have been improved. As part of the Ngong forest the site maintains its indigenous trees, natural vegetation and animals such as monkeys, baboons, dikdik and butterflies. Rowallan also has the well-known Mau Mau caves.
The Moot will leave behind a legacy at Rowallan of an improved infrastructure raising its standards as an international camp and enabling it to be used for future large events. These improvements include two new toilet and shower blocks, a new store facility and improvements to the swimming pool, buildings and water and electrical networks.
